Laser prostatectomy is a minimally-invasive, emerging treatment to remove all or portions of the prostate, while minimizing the surgery’s impact on bladder and sexual functions. There are three types of laser prostatectomies: visual laser ablation (removal) of the prostate (VLAP), interstitial laser coagulation (ILC) and holmium laser resection of the prostate (HoLRP).
Radical prostatectomy is the surgical removal of the prostate and some surrounding tissue. It can be done laparoscopically (using a thin lighted tube-scope and instruments inserted through a small hole in the abdomen), open, or robotically.
The da Vinci robotic surgical system enables the minimally-invasive removal of the prostate. Surgeons use a number of mechanical arms with microscopic hands to make small incisions and do their work.
